Portland see + do

While Portland itself offers some excellent diversions, it is the city's remarkable location, 90 minutes from the mountains in one direction and the Pacific Ocean in the other, that really sets it apart from others. It has long been a nature enthusiast's wonderland, and whether you're looking to try your hand at extreme sports (kiteboarding, anyone?) or simply want to stroll along a few of the many miles of hiking trails in Forest Park, there is something for everyone.

But to really understand and appreciate Portland's laid-back spirit, it's worth spending some time right in town, doing the things the locals like to do: exploring the art in the Pearl District galleries, shopping at the local farmers' markets, browsing the shelves at Powells, sipping premium coffee or an award-winning pint at one of the many local cafés, and so on. This, more than visiting any single landmark, will give you a sense of why so many Portlanders are convinced they have found the good life.
