Prague's most important historical sights are almost all in Prague 1, the historical center that includes Old Town (or Staré Město) and Malá Strana (sometimes referred to as the Lesser Quarter). The tourist trail runs from Prague Castle and St. Vitus's Cathedral, across the Charles Bridge to the Old Town Square, then on to Wenceslas Square and the old Jewish ghetto of Josefov. None of this should be missed—but try to come when the crowds are thinner, either in spring or fall, or at the early or late extremes of the day. A walk across Charles Bridge isn't much fun when it's packed with tourists, but the sight of it at sunrise might make you rip up your return ticket.
Aside from the greatest hits, Prague is a breathtakingly beautiful, labyrinthine city on a par with Venice for wandering around and getting lost. You might stumble upon a hidden courtyard where strains of Mozart drift from a high window. Then there's the new city, the ever-evolving modern metropolis distancing itself further each year from memories of revolution, Velvet or otherwise. Check out SoNa, the neighborhood south of Národní street, for hip youth culture; Smichov for ambitious urban developments; and the redeveloped port of Holešovice for former factories and warehouses sprouting art galleries.
