The triumphant 2007 return of this midcentury modern masterpiece coincided with the restoration of western Condado's high hip status. La Concha has always been a magical place, with fanciful elements like a restaurant set inside a massive cement seashell and a diamond-patterned facade. But this is no museum piece. Architects knocked down walls to open up the space and added floor-to-ceiling glass doors for quick passage from the lobby to the multilevel pool, creating an alfresco all-night party platform. The $182 million renovation also added low-slung furnishings that pay homage to the past while feeling completely current, with the assistance of high-tech toys like Wi-Fi and iPod docks. Our only reservation: Condos going up on either side will mean construction clamor for the next several years. The revels of guests in the lobby bar last until the wee hours of the morning, as well (though the noise level at La Concha isn't as disruptive as at the San Juan Water & Beach Club). If you can't sleep through 'em, join 'em: The late-night scene here is one of the most ridiculously fun and fab on the island.
