Look out for unexpected baggage charges

We got our bags to Puerto Rico on Airtran Airways for free. When we returned, the bags went through USDA, and weighed under 50 pounds. The attendant at the baggage check in counter took a tape measure out and said we were oversized by 2". Airtran charged us $35 per bag to get it back home. If we did not pay, they were going to keep our bags. Was my two extra inches per bag going to take up all their cargo space? We have traveled all over the place with these same bags for over 5 years. I have never had a problem until now. Make sure of your airline regulations for baggage before leaving. It might get there for free, but it won't return for free. report a problem
