Getting to Corcovado

There are a number of ways to get to the famous statue of Christ. Our guidebook recommended taking a taxi to the entrance and then having the cab driver wait for us until we got back. What the book did not mention, is that the cabs are only allowed to wait at a certain spot, which is no where near the entrance. Unbeknownst to us, there is a bus which takes you from the drop off point to the entrance leading up to the statue. When we got arrived at the drop off spot, there were no buses waiting, and as we did not know any better started walking. It is a grueling several mile uphill hike through heat and humidity. We started walking, saw buses zipping by, but still did not understand the system. After 20 minutes of hiking, we decided to turn back. When we arrived back at the bottom, the bus was loading passengers. We got on, had an easy (and air conditioned) climb to the top and enjoyed the rest of our visit to Corcovado. Of course, the taxi meter was running the entire time we were gone! report a problem

id also add that its not a good idea to travel there before nightfall. the park closes shortly after dark anyways, but its not in a great area and there is often theft. we had a driver wait for us and even he was a bit nervous because it was so close to closing time...
