If you want to experience something really special and memorable, try to sign up for the 90 minute Excavation Tour tof the Necropolis hat takes you underneath St. Peter's Basilica to explore the excavation of the City of the Dead. Like everywhere in Rome, buildings were built atop former buildings and historical sites. You need to write well in advance of your trip as they only bring 12 people down per tour and the total number of people per day is very limited. It's not expensive.
