A little sugar goes a long way. But, watch your purse/wallet. You're not the first unsuspecting tourist the people there have seen. When purchasing things, I acted "the dumb blonde", "now, let's see, I gave you $X, so I should get $Y back?" Quanto costa (how much does this cost? goes a long way too) Please (per favore) and thank you (grazie). Be complimentary: Questa e Bella! This is beautiful! Buon Giorno!
