Rome nightlife
Rome has a number of distinct nightlife zones, each with its own particular feel. For high-density clubs offering anything from salsa to live jazz to international DJs, head for well-established Testaccio or newly buzzing Ostiense. A more laid-back smart set occupy the trendy bars of the alleys in the "triangolo della pace" area just west of Piazza Navona. Visitors with little grasp of Italian take comfort in one another's company in Trastevere. Alternative types bang bongos in Campo de' Fiori. And romantics? They lean on the railings around the Roman Forum, gazing, rapt, at the spectacular illuminations, or climb the Gianicolo hill for a breathtaking view right across the Eternal City.
Romans are endearingly un-ageist in their nightlife activities: Twenty- and thirtysomethings may be numerous in the discos listed here, but older (or younger) partiers won't feel out of place. Bars, too, host a heterogeneous crowd; the point here is not drinking—Romans, on the whole, aren't great imbibers—but long congenial evenings chatting with friends. Note than many clubs close down for the summer (mid-June to Sept.), so call ahead to check.
