Salzburg hotels
The best of Salzburg's hotels are clustered, like everything else, in the heart of the Alstadt, which is where you will probably want to bed down. Although the tradition-bound city is best known for its Old World inns, a smattering of style-conscious hotels has recently invaded the Baroque core of the old town. If you want to escape the lineup of lodgings on the Getreidegasse, head—literally—for the hills, where a variety of recently renovated Schloss hotels (palaces built in the Middle Ages) offer opulent Alpine retreats (and in some cases double as full-scale resorts). One warning: Salzburg doesn't offer enough rooms to service the high-season hordes, so book as far ahead as possible for the top lodging choices.
