My husband and I took a week's vacation to San Francisco back in February for the first time, and definitely did not want to hit any tourists spots if we could possibly help it. Upon the advice of a fellow pastry chef he works with, we decided to go to Tartine the morning we flew into the city, and couldn't imagine that we were not sitting at a cafe in the middle of Paris! Seating is a bit lacking (there are also a few tables outside, and the 60s weather was much warmer than what we left in Boston), but don't let that discourage you. I would have sat on the hood of our rental car if there hadn't been a table for two! I had a chocolate croissant and he had a regular croissant that was made with sourdough and as big as his head, along with a quiche with ham and spinach; this and two huge cups of tea came to $23.00 and they only take cash, but I would have paid much more for an experience like this. After leaving the city a few days later for our hotel that was about an hour down the coast, we seriously debated whether or not to drive back into San Francisco for a third visit to Tartine -- decided it was too decadent, but we'll head there next year when we fly back for another vacation. Truly worth it, and one must go to Paris to get pastry this good in America!
