Concierge.com's insider take:
The largest island in the Bay, Angel Island was home to the Miwok Native Americans before being taken over by the Spanish, and was later used as an immigration and quarantine station. While hiking, you'll see the occasional ruin among the eucalyptus and sagebrush. Climb to the top of 800-foot Mount Livermore to enjoy a picnic while contemplating the spectacular view. The ferry departs hourly from 10 am to 4 pm from Pier 41 (415-705-5555; www.blueandgoldfleet.com).
