The Sutro Baths, once three acres of pools that could hold 25,000, closed in 1952 and are now nothing but crumbling walls and brackish ponds. These melancholy ruins, with the seething Pacific as backdrop, mark one end of the beautiful Coastal Trail around Land's End. Starting from the parking lot above the Baths, the trail skirts the wooded promontory (a popular gay cruising area) to offer stunning views of Golden Gate Bridge from the seaward side.
