San Juan hotels
San Juan's hotels—as opposed to its resorts—are clustered within the colonial-era walls of Old San Juan. There, the choices include small historic hotels (El Convento, the Gallery Inn—both charming but beachless) as well as a few hotels oriented more toward business and convention travelers, such as the Caribe Hilton (which does have a beach). As you travel east into the neighborhoods of Condado, Ocean Park, and Isla Verde, you'll find San Juan's string of beachfront resorts. These range from trendy, party-all-night options (like La Concha, El San Juan, and the San Juan Water & Beach Club) to family-style beach resorts like the Ritz-Carlton.
All of these resorts are full of hustle and bustle, running on San Juan's exuberant blend of the tropical, the European, and the New York. Service isn't great in San Juan hotels, but the pool and beach scenes buzz, with almost every lounger filled by 9 am. Get there early and stake your claim with a paperback and a towel.
