San Juan nightlife
Going out in San Juan at least once is a must. The scene in San Juan exists only on the weekends, when the entire city throws on teetering heels and silk shirts to hit the streets en masse. Standard order of operations: dinner at nine or ten, drinks at midnight, dancing until the sun rises over the beach.
In Old San Juan, the crowd is a mixture of tourists and very young locals. Many of the restaurants like Marmalade or Blend (309 Fortaleza Street; 787-977-7777) turn into de facto lounges after midnight. Clubs open around 11 pm and stay open until the following morning (technically, they're supposed to close at 4:30, but rarely do). The two largest, best developed nightlife scenes are actually found in resorts: La Concha and El San Juan, along with Wet at the San Juan Water & Beach Club and the Normandie Hotel's N Lounge. Locals, edgier clubbers, and the gay crowd prefer the still-in-transition neighborhood of Santurce. There, don't miss the Plaza del Mercado, where bars and late-night eateries spill over with friendly crowds of San Juaneros.
