San Juan nightlife
Going out in San Juan at least once is a must. The scene in San Juan exists only on the weekends, when the entire city throws on teetering heels and silk shirts to hit the streets en masse. Standard order of operations: dinner at nine or ten, drinks at midnight, dancing until the sun rises over the beach.
In Old San Juan, the crowd is a mix of tourists and young locals. Many of the restaurants, such as Marmalade and Blend (309 Fortaleza St.; 787-977-7777), turn into de facto lounges after midnight. Clubs open around 11 pm and stay busy until the following morning (they're officially supposed to close at 4:30 but rarely do). The two largest, most elaborate nightlife scenes are actually found within resorts: La Concha and El San Juan along with Normandie Hotel's N Lounge and Wet at the San Juan Water & Beach Club. Locals, edgier clubbers, and the gay crowd prefer the still-in-transition neighborhood of Santurce. There, don't miss the Plaza del Mercado (a.k.a. La Placita), where revelers gather after work on Thursdays and Fridays to throw back some Medallas while dancing to live salsa bands or dining at local eateries like Tasca el Pescador.
