I stayed in 2008. While the hotel is small, the dining room and pub were packed when I checked in. They get a lot of business from B&Bs and other small hotels without restaurants, and even locals.
Do be aware that tiny Port Charlotte is way out in the boondocks, which is good if that is what you want. Also, the last order for the restaurant is at 8:45 pm so if you arrive later, you are out of luck completely as the nearest town with an open restaurant is quite a drive, so hurry when you disembark from the ferry.
Lots of distilleries and peace and quiet on Islay (pronounced eye-lah). Only 3,000 people on 250 square miles. MUST have a car, although there is some bus service.
This is NOT Edinburgh, so be prepared for lack of shops, restaurants, etc!!! A lovely place, however, and i plan to go back for at least 4 days to walk the beaches and explore part of the real Scotland.
