Scottish Highlands hotels
Expect baronial splendor at most high-end hotels in the Highlands and Islands rather than cutting-edge gadgetry or hot design labels. In keeping with the rural theme, many, although not all, are sited in deliberately remote locations; most visitors are here to escape the rat race as opposed to being close to the action. If you need a city or town close at hand, a fair proportion of notable hotels are clustered around the main population centers of Inverness, Oban, and Fort William. The main season runs from Easter to the end of September, but booking in advance is advisable at all times of year. Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) is often a busy time in the Highlands.
