Seattle shopping

Shopping in Seattle is not going to blow away fashionistas—the whole polar-fleece stereotype is kinda true—but cute boutiques have been popping up lately like so many fall mushrooms. Label-hounds should stick to Fifth Avenue and the surrounding blocks, where they'll find everything from Barneys and the flagship Nordstrom to Betsey Johnson. Belltown has more labels and high prices, along with a cluster of well-edited design stores. Capitol Hill, particularly the Pike–Pine corridor, is your best bet for hipster duds, vintage, and eclectic home decor. Fremont's assortment of shops includes both a bi-level vintage mart and one of the most expensive boutiques in the city. Ballard's lovely brick-building-lined shopping area has everything from pricey midcentury modern furniture to an apothecary. Other items to look for? Books—Seattle's passion for reading is strong enough to sustain one of the country's only two bookshops devoted to poetry. And, of course, food: Tempt the TSA by bringing home bottles of Washington wine, smoked salmon, and artisanal chocolates and cheeses.
