Especially if you're a single man travelling alone. The shopping was only giant bargain Chinese department stores and the louche women who "just want to talk" (no, I didn't fall for their scams) were more annoying than any time-share hawkers in Vegas. West Nanjing is nicer and caters to fancy expats but avoid East Nanjing! Or head for the French Concession! report a problem

If you want a huge range of Chinese chochkies cheap, go to Yu Yuan shopping area surrounding Yu Yuan Park in Shanghai. You can bargain--often 1/4 to 1/2 off the stated price--and the choice is huge. Perfect for bringing home souvenirs and gifts. Nanjing Dong Lu is indeed more expensive and less interesting.
