Shanghai restaurants
The Pearl of the Orient has long been known for its range of international cuisines, a tradition still reflected by the current dining scene. Tony French and fusion restaurants abound, particularly on the Bund, but other flavors are also well represented, from Thai to Indian to Japanese. Local cuisine features subtle, sweet flavors enhanced by a high note of vinegar, and plenty of seafood—no surprise, since the name Shanghai translates as "on the sea." Delicate xiaolongbao soup dumplings and their heartier, breadier cousins, shengjianbao, remain popular snack foods. If you'd like to sample the region's most famous delicacy, hairy crab, remember that it is available only in the autumn (from October to November). Locals flock to places like Wang Bao He to feast on the sweet meat, which is dipped in black vinegar and washed down with ginger tea. As in most of China, mealtimes tend to be early, so it's best to be at your table before 8 p.m.—if you want to eat later, call ahead or risk a closed door.
