Shanghai shopping
In Shanghai, shopping is second nature: As urban incomes rise, so too does the demand for global fashions and accessories. There's barely a brand in the world that isn't tapping into Shanghai's penchant for a purchase. Over the course of a trip, non-Chinese tourists in Shanghai will generally be greeted with "Gucci Prada" more than "hello" or "ni hao." And you'll be blown away by Shanghai's ceaseless knockoffs. But beyond the main streets—in places like Taikang Lu, 1933, and the Loft—a new generation of Shanghai designers is weaving Chinese aesthetics into functional, street-savvy fashions and housewares. In the Old City, look for Cultural Revolution–era curios, old books, watches, and Maoist memorabilia. If you're shopping for contemporary art in Shanghai, head to the cluster of galleries in the Moganshan Lu warehouse district.
