Winston Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa $$$$
From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:Everything about this 30-room hotel is chic and intimate, from the cozy bar off reception to the monochromatic marble bathrooms. A low-rise enclave in the swanky suburb of Melrose, minutes from Jo'burg's business and shopping districts, the Winston is a perfect little urban retreat, especially if you're traveling alone. High-ceilinged, elegant guest rooms have either a veranda or a balcony and one of three themes, including a French boudoirstyle on the first floor. The lap pool occupies a courtyard garden where birds chatter in the trees. The streetwise staff deliver tips on sourcing retail heaven or tapping into Jozi culture. A photographic frieze depicts the city's turbulent gold-rush history in the Commissioner Restaurant, where no request is too much trouble, should you not be happy with dishes such as the robust calamari Niçoise salad with warm focaccia. This being Jo'burg, hotel security is top priority. 2011 Hot List
