If you are driving from Garden Route to Cape town, you'll probably pass through the ostrich capital - Oudtshoorn. A couple of farms offer ostrich shows. We took ours at Oudsthoorn Ostrich Show Farm. Man, if you are an animal lover, don't go there - the way they treat the ostriches sometimes were too much. At first they show you a hatching egg - this process takes couple of days, so they hold up half hatched bird with a shell on it and you can take photos and hold it. Creepy. Then you can take a small bird and hold it. Beware they do poop and a lot. Afterwards you continue to Betsy - an ostrich left for posing with tourists. They make jokes about how stupid ostriches are and make couple practical jokes on Betsy. Then you are taken to the ostrich riding yard, where you can ride an ostrich. The rule is that you must be not over 65 kilos, but they let way heavier guys to try. All people fell down in no time. There is also a 'sitting on the ostrich' attraction for making photos - they put a bird into V form wooden wall, put a sack on it's head, hold it's but and get smbd willing on the top. The bird is so stressed that after some 4th person it's legs are can also stand on the eggs, feed the birds, shop at their local shop and eat ostrich meat. Somehow the views we saw left us without appetite. report a problem
