Jestine's is one of those places people talk about. The small hole in the wall with outstanding food that gets a reputation. It is terrific southern food and if I had to reccommend only one place to stop this would be it. Having said that it is not your fancy white table cloth and candle lit kind of place so if that is what you're looking for move along. Jestines has a crush of worn tables and chairs in a corner building on meeting street. The fans spin as diners come and go. At lunch and dinner there is usually a line of people waiting to get in but go at a little off prime time and you can get in easily but even at prime time the line moves at a good pace. Finally the food. It is wonderful! I've had nothing bad here. You willl always hear about the famous Fried Chicken, and rightly so but I'd particularly reccommend the fried pork chops and the fried oysters too. Other must haves are the fried green tomatos, the coca-cola cake, the fried okra, mac n cheese, cucumber salad.... There is much to eat and enjoy here. Mostly the nay sayers I encountered are people who are local-ish and have their own "family recipies" that they love so no one elses measures up. Usually they owned up to loving the food just not the crowd. So give Jestine's a try and you too will sit at home and wonder when you can get back to Charleston so you can eat at Jestine's
