St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca, Calvià, Mallorca $$$$
Concierge.com's insider take:
Situated between the city of Palma and the Portals yacht harbor, the sprawling St. Regis resort, with its stucco exterior and barrel tile roof, opened in 2002. The hotel exudes pure Mediterranean glamour from the lobby—an all-white atrium with columns, urns, and huge windows facing the sea—onward. All 133 rooms and suites have a private terrace and views of the sea, thanks to the cliff-top location; the downside is there's no beach, but the three-tiered pool makes up for it. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and decorated in a palette of pale blue, cream, burnt ocher, and white. There's good gear, too: Bang & Olufsen flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, and free Wi-Fi. The marble bathrooms are large, with under-floor heating, oversize tubs, and separate shower. Dining options include Aqua, a rustic-style bistro, and the elegant Es Fum, which serves formal Mediterranean cuisine and enforces a dress code to match. There's underground access from the hotel to the 50,600-square-foot Arabella Spa, which has pretty much every treatment you can think of, including Thalasso, Anne Sémonin, and Ayurveda, as well as a traditional Chinese medicine clinic. All in all, the Mardavall is proof that big can be beautiful; unfortunately, it can feel a little impersonal, too.
