Stockholm nightlife revolves around the "mushroom." That's the nickname given to the large concrete structure that stands on Stureplan, the plaza where Birger Jarlsgatan meets Sturegatan. The swanky Östermalm district that surrounds the mushroom is home to many of Stockholm's hippest bars and clubs, including Riche, Sturehof, and Grodan. Immediately after the workday ends, these pricey hangouts start buzzing with the sort of tourists and Stockholmers who are (depending on your perspective) either thrillingly stylish or embarrassingly fashion-obsessed. If your tastes run to something a little less self-conscious, follow the locals south to Södermalm, west to Kungsholmen, or north to Vasastan. Nightspots in these areas are much more relaxed but still stylish. Allmänna Galleriet 925, for instance, located in a former industrial space on Kungsholmen, feels like something imported from downtown Manhattan.
