A stay at this jungle all-inclusive, the highest-scoring property in this year's Gold List, starts when a driver meets you at the airport "with cold water and moist lemongrass-scented towels—what an introduction." Guests stay in "tents that are a bit hard to call tents": Each has Internet access, a bar, and decor inspired by nineteenth-century adventure travel, hence the mosquito netting and hammered-copper bathtubs. Nong Yao, where tables are enlivened by local stoneware and cutlery, serves regional cuisine that "makes you weep with happiness." Guests can feed and ride the resort's elephants. The venerable hotel chain pitches its first tent with these 15 luxe shelters scattered on 200 rugged acres along the Thai-Burmese border. The canvas-covered, 600-square-foot accommodations are ultra-private and have generous decks, pillowtop beds, outdoor rain showers, and copper bathtubs. True to the camping spirit, guests can opt for communal dining. The most memorable moments here are spent with the six elephants, at river bathing sessions and on treks through the bamboo bush.
