Spend a Friday night around Richmond and John streets, and you'll walk away with the impression that nightclubbing is the city's defining after-hours activity. Make no mistake, the clubs are popular, so much so that the noise and commotion they generate are the subject of an ongoing political debate at city hall. But talk to your average local, and the likelihood is that you'll be directed to one of the city's live-music venues, like the Horseshoe Tavern. This is the city, after all, that gave rise to Rush, Neil Young, and the Barenaked Ladies, and more recently Feist and Broken Social Scene.
