Concierge.com's insider take:
Known to locals as the "upside-down hotel," the Hilton Trinidad is literally built into a hillside, so the entrance and lobby occupy the top floor. Unique configuration aside, the 418 rooms and suites themselves are rather corporate, although an ongoing multimillion-dollar renovation has added a host of stylish amenities such as Scandinavian teak furnishings, glass-enclosed rainfall showers, and flat-screen TVs with DVD players. Facilities include a 5,000-square-foot fitness center with two saunas, tennis courts, and a pair of well-landscaped pools—one for the kids is shaped like Tobago, and the other roughly resembles Trinidad. The atriumlike formal restaurant, Pool Terrace Garden, serves international dishes with a Caribbean twist, like Trini shrimp cocktail and a hearty coconut milk–based callaloo soup.—Updated by Aaron Barker
