Enormous and Beautiful

Built about 1850, Dolmabahçe Palace was the residence used by the sultans of the Ottoman empire. It is a strange mix of neoclassic, rococo and traditional Ottoman styles that merges them all quite pleasantly. While open to the public for tours, it is still occasionally used for official state functions including reception/accommodation for foreign dignitaries. The wildly varying muraled ceilings and astounding crystal light fixtures are each worth the price of admission and its view of the Bosporous is wonderful. While you are free to explore the grounds at your leisure, the interior can only be seen via guided, carefully controlled and slightly rushed tours.
