My wife and I were in Siena Italy right before the big race held 2 times a year in the main square of town. The race is a horse race called Il Palio. All the riders from different neighborhoods are dressed in their own colors. They march through the streets in preparation of the big race. They were putting up the stands when we were there. I saw pictures of previous races What a fun time that would be. Hopefully better planning to see the actual race report a problemPosted on: August 20, 2009 at 11:29PM
The Palio is a must see! My sister and I found tickets from a local travel agent to attend the event several years ago. Although our tickets were "standing against a brick wall" above a sports store in the hot blazing sun for hours, it was fabulous. The parade goes on for hours with colorful costumes and flag routines. The day culminates with the horse race. The horses have difficulty making the square turns on the piazza and it is wild. The entire center of the track is wall to wall people. The end of the horse race was unbelievable as the crowd of thousands celebrates the winner.
