Wondering where to find those idyllic Caribbean beaches with gin-clear water and bone-white sand? Caneel Bay has seven of them on its 170-acre property. In 1956, ecotourism pioneer Laurance S. Rockefeller founded this serene hideaway on a private peninsula as a low-key luxe resort for guests who wanted to stay within Virgin Islands National Park. The rooms still don't have telephones or TVs (instead of a wake-up call, guests can request a wake-up knock); however, you'll be doing anything but roughing it in the 166 guest rooms, outfitted with soothing shades of green, midcentury modern furniture, private patios or balconies, and as a concession to the 21st century, free Wi-Fi access. Celebrities seeking to escape the paparazzi (including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) often book Rockefeller's former residence, a five-bedroom cottage overlooking placid Paradise Beach. Even more history-steeped is the Equator restaurant, set on a hilltop amid the ruins of an 18th-century Danish sugar mill, where fine Caribbean cuisine is paired with nighttime views of the distant lights of St. Thomas. Caneel Bay guests arrive by private ferry from Charlotte Amalie and have unlimited use of Sunfish sailboats, kayaks, and snorkeling gear. Other amenities include 11 tennis courts and a pair of spa cabanas for massages overlooking tranquil Hawksnest Beach.

Appeared in the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List, a directory of the world's best hotels and resorts, in 2007, 2005
