Lying literally at the end of the road in a valley on St. Croix's rugged northwestern coast, the Carambola has an edge-of-the-world solitude that draws in couples, honeymooners, and more than a few business travelers seeking a serene escape. The resort, rebranded a Marriott in 2010, has 156 newly renovated rooms spread among a cluster of 26 two-story buildings by the seaside. The Caribbean plantation-style rooms are decked out with mahogany and rattan furniture, ceiling fans, louvered doors that open onto screened-in porches, and oversize showers in the bathrooms, along with all the modern amenities you'd expect from a chain hotel, including flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. The best views are from second-story Room 16 overlooking the beach, and on a clear day, you can even spy St. Thomas and St. John in the distance. Cell-phone service is spotty, but that just adds to the "check in, check out" feeling here. Plus, there's plenty to keep you busy: the largest freshwater swimming pool on the island, a small, quiet beach, tennis courts, a spa, a full-service restaurant and casual beach bar, an on-site Sweet Bottom Dive Center, and access to the Robert Trent Jones–designed Carambola golf course.
