If you are planning your own trip on, I assume you are not one to be excited about seeing magnificent Venetian Lagoon as on of a inescapable crowd of fifty people that follow guide's bright umbrella through all usual touristy sights. To truly discover Venice, do three things: 1. stay at least 3 days; 2. veer off the beaten path (how lost can you get on an island? ;) 3. DO HIRE A PERSONAL PROFESSIONAL GUIDE! We did, and she greatly enhanced our experience. Fiona Giusto (you can easily find her on the internet) took us on a tour of Murano, Burano, and Torcello. She impressed us right away with her command of English, vast knowledge of area and its history, impeccable manners, cheerful attitude, and thoughtful time management. We spent fantastic 5 hours visiting the islands that are so unlike the City of Venice itself. Highlights included a private presentation by a master glass-blower at Ferro & Lazzarini factory on Murano, sampling of traditional Venetian cookies while shopping for lace on Burano, the 6-part Judgment Day mosaic at St. Maria Assunta Cathedral and peaceful tranquility of Torcello. During vaporetto (waterbus) rides we learned about first settlers in the Lagoon and the modern efforts towards its preservation, marveled at romantic beauty of ruins on abandoned islands, and over-all had an amazing time. I hope you do yourself a favor and not miss out! Buon viaggio!
