Concierge.com's insider take:
Making no secret of its trendy intentions, the mod 78-room Radisson Blu—a renovated Art Nouveau bank—has a prime location near Kohlmarkt and is directly across the street from the Café Central. While the public spaces are all pupil-dilating drama, especially the original bank vault, now converted into a shimmering glass-framed lobby area, the guest rooms have a present-day feel. The shower-only bathrooms (suites have tubs) have the standard-issue contempo palette of beige and browns and come with the usual tech toys (CD/DVD players, free broadband, flat-panel LCD TVs). There's also an in-house Italian restaurant called Sapori, the buzzing H12 wine bar, and a fitness room and sauna.
From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
The 78-room Style Hotel has a lot to recommend it, from an exceptionally well-drilled staff to an excellent Italian restaurant (in case you get schnitzel fatigue). The masculine decor (think oversized beige leather headboards, fat down comforters, and dark-wood built-ins) is relaxing if rather generic. Some details delight—raiding the minibar won't cost you a penny—while others disappoint: robotic front-desk staff and no bathtub. Location is everything: A good portion of the city's best museums and finest shopping are minutes away, and the comfort factor here is deep-dish Mitteleuropa despite the self-conscious desire to be hip.2006 Hot ListWhen to go: May is romantic, with its lilacs and flowering chestnut trees, while December is animated.
Which room to book: Sixth-floor doubles that don't overlook the noisy Herrengasse (doubles, $260–$319).
