Vieques + Culebra see + do

Vieques and Culebra have a turn-back-the-clock feel: Locals wave from their front porches and wild horses wander the beaches. Unlike the rest of the Caribbean, the islands have avoided problems like congestion (there's not a single traffic light) and commercialism (no Starbucks—or any other chain, for that matter.) There are a couple of attractions in Vieques—an old fort, a squat lighthouse—but those are best saved for a rainy day. What you're really here for are the beaches, and in both Vieques and Culebra you are spoiled for choice. If you're feeling guilty about so much time spent doing nothing, take a hike through the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge or hire a boat to take you to one of the smaller islands, such as Isla Culebrita, where you can wander along the beachfront trails or explore near an abandoned lighthouse.
