The Metropole was a sleepy yet delightful osasis back in the 1980s, but during my recent trips, I am sorry to say I notice it's gotten a bit too....comment dit? Hiltonesque? It's getting to look like many other international chain hotels inside (although the exteriors of the famous old wing are still gloriously colonial-classic and in a class all its own). The food remains some of the best in Hanoi (for western food, that is), and the pool area is charming. I did have a problem last time with the concierge calling me a taxi to the airport. The driver turned out to be a young woman who was rude, threatening and intimidtaing and who demanded additional money after the fare had been settled by the Metropole's lovely lady concierge. Guests should be warned to make sure the hotel appoints a safe driver. As for Hanoi, since the 80's it has lost its appeal as a charming, sleepy colonial backwater and is now so manic and the din so consistently loud that after a few hours outside all you want to do is get out of town.
