As befits a town notorious for its rain, Seattle has some standout theaters. Saved from impending destruction in 1999 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the retro Cinerama has a massive 90-by-30-foot curved screen (for three-strip films) and a wave-shaped ceiling to optimize the theater's surround-sound system. The subterranean Big Picture has the feel of a super-stylish living room, complete with leopard-print sofas and curlicued mirrors in the lounge area. Grab a martini from the bar and settle into a rocking chair in the theater, where first-run art-house films play weekly.
