WHEN TO GO
The best time to visit the picturesque town of Weimar is in the warmer months of May to September. Winters can be cold and wet. Because this town is off the beaten path, mobs of tourists are never really a problem.
HOW TO GET THERE
AIRPORT
The nearest airport is Erfurt (the town is 15 minutes from Weimar by train), but there are no flights on weekends. Even if you are willing to make multiple connections, flights from the United States are very limited.
A better bet is to fly into Dresden-Klotsche. You won't be able to fly directly from the States, but Dresden-Klotsche does receive regular connections from many major European cities and is serviced by Lufthansa as well as several other airlines. Total flying time is approximately seven and half hours from New York, 10 hours from Chicago, and 12 hours from Los Angeles.
From Dresden, the Weimar Hauptbahnhof branch of the major Deutsche Bundesbahn rail lines connects Erfurt with Dresden. The trains run frequently in both directions. For information and schedules, call 01805/996633.
GETTING AROUND
Once you arrive at your hotel, the small town of Weimar is generally accessible by foot, but car rentals are available at the local airports.
