Riviera Maya hotels

New hotels in the Riviera Maya open so frequently, even hotel junkies have a hard time keeping up. Brands like Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental, and Banyan Tree have all launched properties. Resorts from luxury brands Capella and Auberge are in the works, though construction in general has slowed down in the tough economy. While many hotels on the Yucatán Peninsula are all-inclusives and timeshares, an amenities arms race among luxury properties has made the Riviera Maya the most opulent region in the country. So, how do you decide where to stay? Private and pricey Riviera Maya hotels such as Jashita, Maroma, and Escencia dot the coastline, with the most luxurious huddled in and around the Mayakoba and Punta Maroma areas. The rapidly growing city of Playa del Carmen has begun to go the way of downtown Cancún, with T-shirt shops and a Girls Gone Wild nightlife scene, but hotels like the Básico and Deseo have maintained their hipster cred. For more laid-back lodging, head to Tulum. Though it's matured from its hippie roots, there's still a sense of barefoot luxury in Tulum hotels like Cabañas Tulum and Ana y José.
