Nightlife in the Riviera Maya is scarce: This is a place where sun worshippers outnumber night owls. Just about the only action beyond cheesy shows at all-inclusive resorts or smooth jazz in hotel lounges takes place at the bars in Playa del Carmen. Hit the rooftop bar at the Hotel Básico for spicy micheladas (like Bloody Mary's made with beer) or the Deseo, where hipsters recline on beds sipping martinis. Trance and house music echo from open-air bars and clubs along calles 12, 14, and 16 in Playa del Carmen, but beware: Many of these are Spring Break–style draws for the sauced and sunburned (think tube tops and test-tube shots). For a more upscale experience, come during the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival each November, which attracts big names (George Benson, Tower of Power) to Playa del Carmen and also highlights groups from the emerging local music scene. For a hipper vibe, try the nightlife in Tulum, where clubs range from the South Beach–style Mezzanine to barefoot beach bars where backpackers staying in palapa shacks mix with Ford models escaping from yoga retreats. Cover charges on the Riviera Maya are generally rare, and the party usually gets started after midnight.
