Riviera Maya restaurants
Dining in the Riviera Maya is mostly confined to resort restaurants; many of the best are closed to nonguests. If you're a true foodie, you can let your stomach dictate your hotel choice, and book a room at Esencia or Maroma, both of which have top-notch food. Nonguests can visit the Rosewood Mayakoba for an elegant French dinner at Casa del Lago or a tequila tasting at the Agave Azul.
For non-hotel restaurants in the Riviera Maya, there are a few good options in Playa del Carmen—especially the European treats at La Casa del Agua and the excellent tacos from the Señor Tacombi truck. Dine under the stars at El Tábano or hang out with the hipsters at Mezzanine, both in Tulum. Dining is a laid-back affair throughout the coast, except at the few resorts with dress codes (the insistence on closed shoes for men at the Royal Hideaway, for example). Americans tend to eat lunch and dinner earlier than Mexicans and Europeans, and most restaurants serve dinner from 6 pm all the way through until at least 10 pm. Reservations are rarely necessary except in high season at the fanciest restaurants.
