Desafortunadamente (yes, it means what you think), dining in the Riviera Maya is mostly confined to resort restaurants; many of the best are closed to nonguests. If you're a true foodie, you can let your stomach dictate your hotel choice, and book a room at Hotel Esencia or Maroma. Or you can place your trust in the burgeoning culinary scenes in Playa del Carmen and Tulum, where independent chefs and entrepreneurs are cooking up sophisticated and creative takes on Mexican dishes. Although dining is always a laid-back affair, it's a good idea to make reservations in high season.
