Concierge.com's insider take:
Maya villages, pristine jungles, and lagoons still exist in the Riviera Maya, despite the rampant development along the coast. One of the first companies to offer nature tours in the region, Alltournative has created mini eco-parks near Maya communities and offers a combination of adventures including rappelling, zip-lining, and canoeing with lunch and time among the Maya (Avenida 5 between Calles 12 and 14, Playa del Carmen; 52-984-803-9999). Dos Palmas offer night tours to a Maya village, including a session with a local shaman in a temazcal (sweat bath) followed by a cool swim in a cenote (freshwater pools fed by subterranean springs) and late dinner with residents of an indigenous community (Calle 10 at Avenida Constituyentes, Playa del Carmen, 52-984-803-2462).
