Restaurants in Zanzibar offer a true culinary adventure—no surprise for a place nicknamed "Spice Island." The island's storied cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon are put to good use in everything from street food to luxury seafood feasts. Add to that a range of culinary influences—African, Arabic, and Indian—and exceedingly fresh seafood, and you've got a recipe for some seriously good meals. Be sure to sample local specialties like Zanzibar "pizza," a greasy concoction of minced meat and spices cooked in a pastry shell, and pweza wa nazi—octopus simmered in a spicy coconut masala sauce. Street-food aficionados should eat their way through the astonishing range of lobster, shrimp, crabs, and fresh fish piled on seaside grills at Forodhani Gardens. At the opposite end of the spectrum, you have the luxury of Zanzibar's over-the-top resorts, with sumptuous seafood feasts and elegant rooftop restaurants such as the famous dining room of the Serena Inn.
